Website not found: "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN"

Your site shows "This site can’t be reached" or "DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN". What it means, why domains stop pointing to websites, and what to check first.

You might be seeing

  • This site can't be reached
  • DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN
  • Hmm. We're having trouble finding that site.
  • Server not found

What it means

Before a browser can open your website, it asks the internet’s address book (DNS) where your domain lives. This error means the address book answered “this domain does not exist” or had no address for it. The website itself may be perfectly fine. People just cannot find it.

What usually causes it

  • The domain expired. Soon after expiry the registrar stops pointing it to your site. Some show a parking page instead of this error.
  • DNS settings were changed or deleted, often while moving host or setting up a new service.
  • Nameservers point to the wrong place, for example to an old host or a Cloudflare account that no longer exists.
  • A very recent change that has not spread everywhere yet. This usually settles within a few hours, occasionally up to two days.

What you can check yourself

  1. Check the domain’s expiry date where you bought it (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains moved to Squarespace, and so on). If it expired, renew it first. Everything else waits for that.
  2. Try on your phone using mobile data, not Wi-Fi. If it works there, the problem may be your local network or browser.
  3. Remember recent changes: a new host, a new website builder, someone setting up email, or a Cloudflare change.
  4. Look at the “nameservers” setting of your domain and write down what they are. This is often where the mix-up is.

When to ask for help

  • The domain is paid and active, but the site still cannot be found.
  • It broke right after moving your website or email.
  • You cannot log in to the account that owns the domain.

Send me the domain name and where it was bought. I can see from outside what the DNS says right now and tell you exactly which setting to change, or change it for you.
