What it means
Your website uses a security certificate (the padlock, also called SSL or TLS) to prove to browsers that it really is your site. Browsers show this full-page warning when the certificate has expired, belongs to a different address, or cannot be verified. Most visitors leave at this point, so it is worth fixing quickly.
What usually causes it
- The certificate expired because automatic renewal failed. Free certificates last 90 days or less and must renew by themselves.
- The domain was moved to a new host or DNS provider, and the new place never issued a certificate.
- The address does not match, for example the certificate covers
example.combut notwww.example.com. - A paid certificate was not renewed when the invoice came.
What you can check yourself
- Click “Advanced” or the warning details in the browser. The code tells you the reason:
DATE_INVALIDmeans expired,COMMON_NAME_INVALIDmeans wrong address. - Try both addresses: with and without
www. Note which one fails. - Look in your hosting panel for “SSL”, “TLS” or “Let’s Encrypt”. Many hosts show the expiry date and have a “renew” or “run AutoSSL” button.
- Did you recently change host, DNS or Cloudflare settings? That is a common trigger.
Do not tell customers to click “proceed anyway”. The warning also protects them from real attacks.
When to ask for help
- Renewing in the hosting panel fails or shows an error.
- The site uses Cloudflare and you are unsure which side should hold the certificate.
- It keeps expiring again every few months.
Tell me the exact warning code and where your site is hosted. Most of these are fixed the same day, and I also make sure renewal works automatically next time.
